Ingredients
6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced thinly
1.5 cups Old Fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1.5 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with half of the cinnamon and toss until evenly coated.
Spread the seasoned apple mixture into a lightly greased nine-by-nine inch baking dish.
In a separate bowl, mix the oats, flour, remaining cinnamon, and brown sugar.
Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse, wet sand.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples without packing it down.
Bake for forty-five minutes until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling at the edges.
Remove from oven and let cool for ten minutes before serving.
Notes
Use a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples for the best balance of texture and flavor. Ensure the butter is kept cold until the very last moment to achieve the perfect crunchy topping. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
