Description

A creamy, no-fail Southern classic blending ripe bananas, vanilla custard, and whipped cream in alternating layers. Rich, nostalgic dessert that balances sweetness and texture for a comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale

4 large bananas
1.5 cups vanilla custard powder
4 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
1/3 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

Whisk custard powder into milk until smooth. Add sugar and stir over medium heat until pudding thickens (2 minutes, no lumps). Let pudding cool slightly.
Chill a bowl, then beat heavy cream to stiff peaks. Cover whipped cream and refrigerate.
Layer peeled banana slices in a 3-quart dish. Pour warm pudding over bananas. Refrigerate 15 minutes to set. Top with whipped cream and fresh banana slices.
Chill 3 hours before serving for optimal consistency.

Notes

Use overripe bananas for max sweetness
For non-dairy: substitute milk with almond/halal-coconut milk and cream with coconut cream
Chill in airtight container up to 24 hours
Traditionally served at family gatherings
