Ingredients
4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
2 cups Honeycrisp apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1.5 cups old-fashioned oats
0.5 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
0.75 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
2 tsp ground cinnamon
0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp all-purpose flour (for base)
2 tbsp sugar (for base)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Combine sliced apples with half of the cinnamon, a tablespoon of flour, and two tablespoons of sugar directly in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet.
Toss the mixture thoroughly until every slice is coated evenly.
In a medium bowl, mix the remaining flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cold butter.
Work the butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Spread the topping mixture evenly over the seasoned apples in the skillet.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
Notes
Use a 10-inch cast-iron skillet for best results as it retains heat for perfect caramelization. Ensure the butter is cold to achieve the best crumbly texture for the topping. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
