Description

This timeless dessert features tender, cinnamon-spiced Granny Smith apples topped with a buttery, crunchy oat crumble. A classic American treat that balances soft fruit with a golden, textured topping, perfect for any occasion. Using cold butter ensures a light, distinct crumb that remains satisfyingly crisp against the warm fruit base.

Ingredients

Scale

6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup old fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into uniform half-inch thick wedges.
Toss the apples with lemon juice and two tablespoons of sugar in a large bowl.
Spread the apple mixture evenly into a greased 9×9 inch baking dish.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
Cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with small pea-sized pieces of butter.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
Bake for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.

Notes

Avoid using quick oats as they do not provide the same texture as old-fashioned oats. You can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend if desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
