Ingredients
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter or halal-certified margarine (softened)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs (room temperature)
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (unbleached)
3/4 cup halal-approved unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups halal-certified semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper
In a large bowl, cream together the butter or margarine, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy
Beat in the eggs, one at a time
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt
Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined
Fold in chocolate chips and nuts if using
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto prepared sheets
Bake for 12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft
Cool on sheets before transferring to a rack
