- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 large eggs
- 1 ½ cups finely grated Gruyère cheese
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Bring water and butter to a boil.
- Add flour and stir until dough forms.
- Cook briefly to dry dough.
- Remove from heat and add eggs one at a time.
- Fold in Gruyère and seasoning.
- Spoon or pipe onto baking sheet.
- Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and puffed.
Notes
Avoid opening the oven during baking. Reheat in oven for crisp texture. Freeze baked gougères up to 1 month.
