Description
Handheld breakfast bites with a golden, crispy cornmeal crust and juicy vegetarian sausages, cooked to perfection in an air fryer. These oil-free snacks combine sweet and savory flavors for a satisfying crunch.
Ingredients
8 sausages (fully cooked Hebrew National for vegetarian)
1 cup condensed milk alternative (such as evaporated milk)
2 cups coarse cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
1 large egg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for air fryer spray)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional for sweet breakfast)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat air fryer to 380°F
Combine cornmeal, flour, cinnamon (if using), and salt in a large bowl
Mix condensed milk alternative, egg, and 2 tbsp cold water in a separate bowl until smooth
Line air fryer basket with parchment paper rounds to prevent sticking
Dip each sausage into the liquid mixture, ensuring full coverage
Roll sausages evenly in the dry cornmeal mixture, twisting gently for adherence
Let sausages rest on a parchment-lined plate to settle the coating
Place coated sausages in the air fryer basket and spray with vegetable oil
Fry for 5 minutes, then carefully flip each and cook 3 more minutes until golden
Transfer to a serving tray and devour immediately while the crust is crisp
Notes
Gently shake excess cornmeal after coating to avoid oil-resistant clumps
Optional: Chill the coating mixture 10 minutes to improve adhesion
For gluten-free: Use certified gluten-free cornmeal and flour
Serve with hot maple syrup or a fresh salad for balance
