Description

This Homemade French Toast is golden, buttery, and perfectly soft inside with a lightly crisp exterior. Made with thick slices of brioche soaked in a sweet vanilla and cinnamon egg mixture, this easy breakfast classic comes together quickly and tastes comforting and delicious. Perfect for weekend brunch or cozy family mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread (slightly stale)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
  • Maple syrup, for serving (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for serving (optional)
  • Fresh berries, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a wide bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, soaking for 20–30 seconds per side.
  4. Allow excess mixture to drip off, then place bread in the hot skillet.
  5. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crisp.
  6. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  7. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for best texture. Avoid soaking too long to prevent sogginess. Cook over medium heat to ensure even browning. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a toaster or oven for best results.
